About the FIMBA Championships

Maxibasketball (The Latin prefix Maxi means “the highest”) was created in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1969, by Mr. Eduardo Rodriguez Lamas. The term is synonomous with "masters basketball" in the U.S. Following a series of tournaments for South and Central American teams, the 1st World Maxibasketball Championship was held in Buenos Aires in 1991, with 32 teams from 8 countries participating.  With the inclusion of European teams, the term FIMBA (Federation of International Masters Basketball) was later adopted.

The World Championships have been held in Las Vegas, USA, San Jose, Costa Rica, Helsinki, Finland, Montevideo, Uruguay, Ljubljana, Slovenia, Orlando, USA, Christchurch, New Zealand, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and most recently in Prague, Czech Republic where 162 teams from 30 countries participated.

The 1st Pan-American Championship was held in Buenos Aires in 1982.  The 2008 Championship, played in Montevideo, Uruguay, had 43 teams from 12 countries participating.   In 2010, the Pan American Championship will be held in the United States for the first time, in Eugene-Springfield, Oregon.

Ruben Rodriguez Lamas, president of FIMBA, states the goal of the organization as “FIMBA Championships give masters basketball players an opportunity to enjoy the game at the highest level with teams from all over the world."
